David Coleman

David A. Coleman, Ph.D. has thirty-three years experience in executive coaching and change management. Currently, he is the Director of Transition Management Services, a firm that specializes in executive coaching and organization development (OD) with senior leaders. He is co-creator of the executive coaching program at the International Monetary Fund, and was a highly regarded teacher in the Organization Development Certificate Program at Georgetown University for the first sixteen years of that program’s existence.

Dr. Coleman has particular expertise in working with technically-minded clients and has written and presented extensively on working with tough-minded leaders. His primary clients are lawyers, economists, and accountants. Earlier, he offered a number of well-received courses to engineering audiences all over the U.S. through the Association for Media-Based Continuing Education for Engineers (AMCEE).

In coaching, he strives to support an executive’s development without adding anything to their already full plate. His approach focuses on bringing practical frameworks, articles, and ideas to the issues they face—in real time. Known for his warmth and sense of humor, he has been described by many clients as “perceptive.” He has expertise with a variety of 360º feedback instruments including The PROFILOR®, Benchmarks®, SKILLSCOPE®, Voices ®, and the Clark Wilson Survey of Management Practices. In addition, when appropriate, he uses psychological surveys (e.g., Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI®), FIRO-B®) to assist clients in understanding themselves and others.

He has considerable international experience having worked with senior leaders from six of the seven continents. In addition, he has lived and worked in both Europe (Germany, Crete, Iceland) and Asia (Guam, Japan, Philippines) as well as the Americas (U.S., Bermuda, Brazil).

Dr. Coleman has a B.A. from Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. His M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in clinical psychology are from The University of Georgia. In addition, he is a member of the American Psychological Association, a founding member of the Executive Coaching Roundtable, and is a Board Certified Coach (BCC)®.
